Sister M. Thais Lorio, 86, of Chatawa, died there June 8, 2008,
at St. Mary of the Pines. Morning prayer and visitation is 9:30 a.m.
Thursday at St. Teresa Church in Chatawa. The Eucharistic
Celebration will follow at 10:45 a.m. The Rev. Malcolm O’Leary, SVD,

Mary Agnes was born Aug. 29, 1921, in New Orleans, the oldest of 11
children born to Philip and Agnes Marie Toups Lorio.
She began her studies to become a School Sister of Notre Dame in St.
Louis in 1939. At her reception into the congregation she received
the name Mary Thais. She pronounced her vows as a member of this
congregation in 1942.
Sister Thais was professionally prepared for her almost half-century
of teaching as she earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from
Loyola University in New Orleans.
With the exception of a few early years with primary school
students, Sister Thais taught young people in upper elementary or
junior high school. Though she taught in Missouri, Mississippi and
Texas, most of her teaching ministry was in Louisiana. St. Anthony
School in Baton Rouge and Our Lady of Prompt Succor School in New
Orleans were the scenes of her educating youth during three decades.
After this service of teaching, Sister Thais came to St. Mary of the
Pines to recuperate from illness in 1991 and lived there until her
death.
Survivors include her sisters, Sister Dorothy Lorio, O.P. and
Rosemary Millet of New Orleans; and six brothers, Philip, Paul,
James and John of New Orleans, Thomas of Hyde Park, N.Y., and the
Rev. Lloyd Lorio, S.J., of Sri Lanka.
Memorials to honor Sister Thais may be sent to St. Mary of the
Pines, P.O. Box 38, Chatawa, MS 39632.
Pallbearers will be from the Charles R. Brill Council of the Knights
of Columbus.
