Frances Elaine Buie Powell

1936-2008

Frances Elaine Buie Powell, 71, of Baton Rouge and formerly of McComb and Natchitoches, La., died May 1, 2008, at Sunrise of Baton Rouge Assisted Living. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb, then 1 p.m. Sunday at North McComb Baptist Church, until services there at 2 p.m. The Rev. Lee Castello will officiate. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery.

Mrs. Powell was born Nov. 5, 1936, in McComb. She was the daughter of Prentiss and Christine McDavid Buie. She was a retired licensed practical nurse with more than 30 years service at Natchitoches Parish Hospital. She was a member of North McComb Baptist Church and a former member of First Baptist Church in Natchitoches, where she and her husband resided for 40 years before retiring to McComb and then to Baton Rouge.

After losing her mother at an early age, Mrs. Powell was raised by her maternal grandparents, Ithamar and Jessie McDavid. Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her parents; one son, James Powell; her maternal grandparents; and her paternal grandparents, Odom and Gertrude Buie.

Survivors include her husband, Thad Powell Jr. of Baton Rouge; two sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Michelle Powell of Central, La., and John and Eva Powell of Chesapeake, Va.; two brothers and sisters- in-law, Sam and Evelyn Buie of McComb and Mike and Joann Buie of Bogue Chitto; one sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Malcolm Walker of Ruth; six grandchildren, Kyleigh, Brett, Mary Elizabeth, Lauren, Krisi and Jack Powell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
