Nellie Prestridge

1921-2006

Nellie Prestridge, 84, of Baton Rouge and the Mars Hill community, died June 21, 2006, at Camellia Estates Skilled Nursing Facility in McComb, after a brief stay.

Visitation is 5 to 9 tonight at Hartman Funeral Home of McComb, and 9 a.m. Friday until services there at 11 a.m. Dr. Mack Amis will officiate. Burial will be in Mars Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Miss Prestridge and a twin brother, Norwood “Woody” Prestridge were born Aug. 1, 1921, in Amite County. She was the daughter of Robert E. “Bob” Prestridge and Pearla Branch Prestridge.

She was a retired manager of South Central Bell Telephone Company in Baton Rouge. She retired in 1977 after more than 36 years of service. She was one of the first women managers appointed in Louisiana’s Southern Bell Telephone Company, accepting her position in 1966.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Baton Rouge, the Telephone Pioneers of America, past president of The Credit Women’s Breakfast Club and past president of the Board of Managers of Colonial Terrace Homeowner’s Association, serving for 10 years.

Miss Prestridge graduated from Southwest Mississippi Junior College in Summit in 1942 and later attended Louisiana State University night classes while working for the telephone company. In October 2002, she was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at SMCC where she played basketball and tennis.

Miss Prestridge was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Grace E. Prestridge; six brothers, Hubert, Jim, Quin, Raiford, John and Norwood “Woody” Prestridge; and one niece, Bobby Jean Prestridge.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and is survived by 15 nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

In recent years, due to back and hip surgery, she required special care which was provided by numerous people: a wonderful friend and neighbor, Dee Schamberger; cousins, Nellie Rae and Grady Burris; nieces, nephews and their spouses, Susan P. and Rodney Jackson, Barbara P. and Errol Simpson, Steve and Kim Prestridge, Tom and Jan Prestridge, and John and Betty Prestridge.

Pallbearers are Ben Prestridge, Bill Mitchell, Bob Prestridge, Brent Simpson, Donnie Smith, Eric Cutrer, Errol Simpson and Matt Prestridge.
